Greetings Families,
This week we are reading Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night.  We will be talking about camping and constellations during reading, writing and science!   On Friday, we will have our first All School Meeting and our first field trip.  We are going to UMass to watch the Multibands performance at the Fine Arts Center.  It’s important that students understand that good behavior at school earns field trips, so if behavior is not appropriate this week, some students may not be invited to participate.
There has been a lot of discussion about homework this year.  As a second grade, the teachers have decided that we expect students to read 4 times a week and practice math facts.  I will not collect a reading log this year, I will trust that your child is being honest and practicing reading and math facts at home.
We will switch specials on Thursday.  We will have P.E. so please make sure your child has sneakers.
This week’s focus words are as follows:
Spelling Words

Week of:
Sept.6th-Sept. 9th

Welcome Families,

We had a great first week in second grade!  Students are still getting used to our new classroom and expectations for success this year.  Last week we decided on our class rules together:
Be respectful
Be safe
Follow Directions
Always try your best

We have talked a lot about what these rules mean and how to follow them.  At home, you can follow-up on these kinds of discussions.  We also talked about Bucket Filling.  We read the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud.  This book talks about using nice words and actions to make ourselves and others feel good.  We are using a class bucket (which is already over half-way full!) this year.  Individual students as well as the class as a whole can earn scoops in the bucket from good behavior.  When the bucket is filled, the class will receive a reward.

Our Specials Schedule is listed on the back.  I will also be posting this on my blog: http://thepalermopost.blogspot.com/.  Our class will do swimming at the YMCA this year.  Our scheduled dates are:  5/8, 5/10, 5/12, 5/15, 5/17, 5/19, 5/22, 5/24, 5/31, and 6/2.  More information on this program will be sent closer to our start date.
If you have any questions, please call the school, email me: alipal1@gpsk12.org or write me a note in the O.W.L. binder.
Homework this week: We have no formal homework yet.  Please try to read with your child each night!

All the Best,

Mrs.Palermo
